Reading on Apple TV: news in your living room

What’s new, and what have you already read? In the channelBar TV mosaic, the newest items sit at the top, a purple dot marks what’s unread, and one click opens an item big, with a QR code so you can keep reading on your iPhone. The video shows you how in just over a minute.

In channelBar TV, you read your messages in the mosaic. Every column shows up to 50 items, the newest at the top.

What’s new at a glance

Unread items have a purple dot in front of the source. The number in the column header tells you how much is new in that column. Once everything is read, the header shows the column’s symbol again.

Read it big

One click opens an item big: the picture on the left; on the right, the channel and source, the time and the text from the feed.

If the item has a web page, there’s a QR code to the left of the picture: move left from the picture, and the code appears, with the address below it. Scan it with your iPhone and keep reading on the web page.

Opening counts as read

The Back button on your remote takes you back to the mosaic. The dot is gone, and the number is one lower: opening counts as read, and so does playing.

The “Unread” column only shows unread items. Whatever you open there is gone when you come back. So you only see what’s still new.

Clear it all at once

Press and hold an item to open a menu. “Mark Entire Column as Read” clears the whole column; the second entry marks everything from the item’s feed as read – in the video, everything from Brightwater Daily. channelBar doesn’t ask first.

When opening shouldn’t mark anything

Don’t want opening to count as read? The gear at the top right opens “Settings”; choose “Mosaic” and set “Mark as Read When Opened” to “Off”. Out of the box, it’s “On”. When it’s off, an item stays unread even when you open or play it; you then mark items as read from the menu, by column or by feed.
