Search on Mac: find it all again

You remember a message, but not where you saw it? Search in channelBar finds it again across all your channels – in the message, the link, the context and even in your podcast transcripts. A click on an episode opens the player with the match already highlighted in the transcript. The video shows you how in just over a minute and a half.

In channelBar for macOS, “Search Across All Channels…” in the channelBar icon opens the search. The item is there as soon as you have more than one channel with messages.

Where to search

Enter a search term, for example “phone”. “Search In” is set to “All Fields”. So it searches the message, the link, the context and the transcripts of your podcasts. “Condition” and “Date Range” narrow the search down further; if you like, also turn on “Match Case” or “Only Unread”.

Under “Channels”, you choose which channels are searched. By default, it’s all active ones; “Also Search Inactive Channels” adds the rest. Under “Source”, you can even pick individual feeds.

Matches by channel

Click “Search”, and channelBar tells you how many matches there are. You’ll then find them in the channelBar icon under “Search Results (All Channels)”, sorted by channel. Each match works just like in the channel menu: point at it, and you see the details. A click opens the article, and a right-click marks it as read.

Said, not written

Search also finds what was only said in a podcast episode, so what’s in its transcript. A click on such an episode opens the player with the transcript right away, and the matches are highlighted in yellow. The arrows take you to the next match, and a click on a line plays the episode right from there. The video about podcasts shows you more about the player.

Clearing the matches

Your matches stay until you search again or quit channelBar. If you don’t need them anymore, choose “Reset Search” at the very top of “Search Results (All Channels)”.

Searching one channel

Only want to search one channel? In the lower part of every channel menu is “Search…”. The matches then show up right in that menu, under “Search Results”. If the item is missing, turn on “Enable Search” in the channel’s settings.
